Not since the reconstruction of Shakespeare's Globe Theater in London has there been so much excitement over creating a replica of the fabled Renaissance stage from five centuries ago. After the United States government returned Governors Island, all sorts of plans were drawn up pertaining to the historic buildings, which you can learn more about HERE.

For those who have toured Castle Williams, it seems instantly obvious how appropriate the courtyard would be for an amphitheater, and its size is identical to the original Globe.

With so many famous personalities and ordinary New Yorkers enamored of this concept, a nonprofit organization called The New Globe has formed, dedicated to exploring the possibility of building a replica of the Globe Theater in this very space, designed by Lord Norman Foster. With the German-born and Cambridge PhD Barbara Romer at the helm of this massive undertaking, and given New York's preeminence as a theater destination as well as the excellent acoustics and remote location of Governors Island, it seems both time and good funding will propel this project forwards to success.
